NIKE Retains satis&fy as General contractor Durin the 2004 Olympic Games
During the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens, NIKE provided a hospitality space for its athletes close to the Olympic stadium. The groundwork began 6 years earlier when Athens College was picked as an ideal spot for NIKE. The 250,000 square meter campus provided vast opportunities for the retailer to offer a variety of events during the games.
satis&fy was called upon, not only as part of the organizing team, but as the general contractor for all build-outs and logistics during the Olympics.
Of the many facilities offered on the college campus, the 1,500 square meter gymnasium was selected as NIKE’s main lounge area. Using large banners as dividers, the gymnasium was separated into several smaller office areas for catering, games, meeting spaces, sports marketing, operations, a 300 square meter PR media lounge and more. Each of the office spaces needed to be wired and hooked up to the network.
The complete perimeter of the gymnasium was dressed up and treated with custom built fence lines to direct the guests to the right destinations. One of the most popular destinations was the college’s pool. Used extensively by the guests, the pool underwent a complete overhaul and dress up to match NIKE’s speed campaign concept.
Another focal point of the set up were the two pavilions, each with an area of 10×5 meters and a height of 4 meters, that contained a meeting room and a private lounge. Again, integrating NIKE’s speed campaign, production of each room/lounge included:
- The use of brushed aluminum square tubes with marmoleum floor inlays.
- Walls that consisted of acrylic panels hung from steel rods to provide a certain lightness.
- The application of several huge graphics and athletes’ images onto the acrylic panels.
- Custom-designed furniture built specifically for this event.
- A walnut raised floor and silk fabric walls.
For entertainment, several game consoles were provided as well as foosball, a pool table and ping pong tables. An outdoor stage was built for daily press conferences on the track next to the gym. In addition, all facilities and bathrooms went through a complete overhaul during this time.
satis&fy was also responsible for the installation of 200 KW of theater lighting as well as a paging system that worked throughout the space from two reception desks. Several flat screens throughout the space provided continuous TV coverage of every event. And, air conditioning units with 800 KW cooling capacities were installed just for the Olympics. For safety precautions, the electrical power drawn from the public utility was backed up by the installation of an additional 700 kVA.
With a special focus on security during the Olympics the whole perimeter of the college (1.6 kilometers) was equipped with barbed wire and a main car gate was installed. And, guests were escorted through a security tent where lugguage screening facilities were in place.
Logistically, satis&fy’s biggest challenge was providing sleeping rooms for the installation crew that was flown in from Germany. In order to do this within a limited budget, 26 classrooms were transformed into fully-furnished, air-conditioned sleeping rooms and catering facilities. Twelve golf carts provided the transportation needed within the campus and 11 trailers transported all of the necessary equipment down to Athens.
