satis&fy Constructs Europe's Largest LED Nightscreen in Berlin

Satis&fy was the company responsible for setting up Europe’s largest billboard display in Berlin. For the first time ever, the LED screen, which stands 40 yards high by 20 yards wide, could be seen shining from the industrial monument known as “Gasometer Berlin.”

Working on behalf of Ströer MEGAPOSTER GmbH, satis&fy mounted the screen at the upper third of the Gasometer on a specially designed truss frame. 550 LED strands consisting of 27.500 LED nodes were connected for this digital outdoor display.

The project started in July when six company experts and approximately twelve industrial climbers began assembling the electronic advertising wall. After a month of hard work, the nightscreen was unveiled in August.

Moving the structure alongside the Gasometer to a height of 85 yds. involved a sophisticated technical procedure that took more than six hours to complete. Complex bolting operations locked the structure in place.

The digital installation project involved approximately six months of complex approvals and permit procedures, in-depth hazard analysis, detailed statics and technical planning. “During this time we had to consistently consult our structural designers. For instance, wind loads had to be recalculated daily. On certain days we couldn’t work at all, due to high wind conditions,” reported Tobias Holler, satis&fy’s project-manager.

To guaranty that strict safety standards were met on location, a team of specialized industrial climbers, rigging experts and network engineers were brought in. “Work had to be divided into shifts. Working at the top meant others below had to take a break. This was one of the safety regulations,” explained Frank Schulte, satis&fy’s technical manager and the on-site man in charge for the execution of the project.

This luminous advertising, which enables high quality realization of anything from animated images to video playback, is scheduled to illuminate the Berlin sky for five years. According to Gerd Henrich, general manager of Ströer MEGAPOSTER GmbH, the project will be contributing financially to the step-by-step restoration of the Gasometer.
