satis&fy Goes Inside the Forbidden City

88 days before the opening o f the 29th Olympics in Beijing, Frankfurt-based satis&fy was busy planning and creating the stage for NIKE’s presentation of the official competition outfits they designed for the Chinese Olympic team.

Held inside the Forbidden City, to an audience of 500 guests and international media, the presentation included a 20’ w by 30’ high stage set up for video playback in the courtyard of the Tai Miao Ancestral Temple. Guests entered the performance on a 100 ft. long and 13 ft. wide red carpet.

“The concept behind the stage design was inspired by the world-tour stage setting of a well-known British artist and composer,” explained project manager Aleksandar Dojcinovic. The slightly curved stage was designed and executed by satis&fy’s team of 27 technicians supported by an additional crew of up to 100 local suppliers. LED specialists mounted 2,00 BARCO MiSTRIPS’ pixel strips onto a steel structure. And, 30 BARCO O-lites were integrated into the stage design to provide an additional depth effect.

Satis&fy was on site for 10 days. In addition to the main stage, the production company:

  • Built four smaller Tai Chi stages.
  • Planned and locally produced 22 footwear-displays.
  • Produced two 4 ft. x 50 ft. BMX ramps. The ramps lay on two of the temples staircases that were elaborately covered with rubber-cushioned and wood-encased metal construction.
  • Built two mobile ramps used during the show.

Pre-production in this case was a particular challenge because logistics, monumental protection obligations, extensive talks with Chinese authorities, rehearsal schedules, and lighting times for the temple had to be sorted out way in advance.
